Dobermann Welfare Association Website

Brand New WebsiteUpdated April 2011

This is the brand new home of the Dobermann Wefare Association, after much hard work and one of our toughest winters for a log time. But we're back and with a fresh new website which we hope you enjoy. Please browse these pages to find out more about the work we do and hopefully the help you can give to some unfortunate dobermanns around the country.

The aim of the Dobermann Welfare Association is to rescue and rehome dobermanns, providing care for them, whether they have been ill-treated, are unwanted, or have come to us from owners who are no longer able to look after them.

The Dobermann Story

How it all started for the dobermannUpdated April 2011

The Dobermann Pinscher, as it was called, was named after the man who pioneered the breed, Mr Louis Dobermann. A tax collector and dog fancier of Thueringen in Germany during the 19th century. Mr Dobermann's ambition was to breed the perfect working dog - loyal fit and intelligent. Although records are limited on how Louis Dobermann bred the early Dobermann many speculate that the German Pinscher, Rottweiler, Manchester Terrier and Greyhound are amongst others in the ancestry of the breed.

By 1900 the breed was recognized by the German Kennel Club and shortly after the breed began to appear in the UK and USA.
